While I was researching this blog, I learned that Greek masks were made out of wool, linen, cotton, and animal hair. The eyes were hand drawn, and there were holes in the nose and mouth. Men were allowed to act but women weren't. Masks were used to exaggerate expressions, and to help men play women. Theatre was used to worship the Greek god Dionysus. Greek masks have made a big impact on our world , because without Greek masks, actors wouldn't be able to work with masks. Although I don't think the Greeks made the best choices they have made a big impact on our world today.
In Ancient Greek Theatre seating was somewhat related to social class, but not completely. It's actually quite simple to explain. There was only two kinds of seating. VIP seating was for priests and officials of the city. These seats were called Prohedria. These were considered seats of honor. In the theatre anyone was welcome to watch the plays and musicals. Attending the theatre was considered so important that the government paid for the poor to attend. This meant that everyone could attend the theatre regardless of social class. In conclusion, Ancient Greek Theatre demonstrated social class, but still included both rich and poor people. Click here to visit the main site I used to write this post. Women were often encouraged to stay in the home. When men entertained their wives were not allowed to participate. Women were not allowed to participate in the Olympic games either. Women were also discouraged from going outside the home because their skin would get dark and pale skin was considered the style for women. Women were not allowed to attend most public events. Only poor women who were considered low class would even go to the market without a male escort. Women rarely got to attend the theatre. Participating in the plays was out of the question. The way women were treated in Ancient Greece can be described in this quote from Thucidydes, "The greatest glory [for women] is to be least talked about among men, whether in praise or in blame.
